Sharing Insights on Differentiated Teaching at the Confucius Institute
On 30 January 2026, I was honoured to be invited as a speaker at a professional development programme for local Chinese language teachers from English-speaking countries across Europe, held at the Confucius Institute.
During the session, I shared my experience and reflections on differentiated teaching, with a particular focus on how teachers can adapt their methods to meet the diverse needs of learners. The discussion explored practical classroom strategies, student engagement, lesson planning, and ways to support learners with different abilities, personalities, cultural backgrounds, and educational experiences.
It was a valuable opportunity to meet so many professional and dedicated Chinese language teachers. Everyone contributed actively, exchanged ideas openly, and shared examples from their own classrooms. These conversations reminded us that effective teaching is not simply about applying one method to every student. It is about understanding each learner and creating an environment in which every child can feel supported, confident, and motivated to progress.
Differentiated teaching is not only a teaching technique, but also an educational philosophy. Children grow up in different families, cultures, and learning environments, and each student brings their own strengths, challenges, interests, and ways of communicating. As educators, our responsibility is to recognise these differences and provide appropriate opportunities for every learner to succeed.
I was grateful to be part of such an inspiring and meaningful event. The experience strengthened my belief that professional exchange and collaboration are essential for improving teaching practice and creating more inclusive, student-centred classrooms.
